These days, the niche of independent video game developers is filling up at a monstrous speed – I plunged a little into this whirlpool and became stunned by the number of people who want to create, show and promote their games. Varying degrees of quality and readiness, with different purposes – from fun to profit. More and more thematic platforms, fundraising portals and other entertainment venues are appearing for anyone eager to revive their Frankenstein.
And this is good, no doubt about it. This means there is demand, there are positive incentives to work. There are chances that you will be seen, the game will be appreciated and maybe even loved. And giving back is important to any creative person – “writing on the table,” as the writers of the past used to say, of course it’s possible, but it’s hard. Any criticism, even negative, is better than dust and oblivion.
Armed with such simple thoughts, I gathered my many years of experience in 3D modeling and gaming into a large and not very strong fist, and hit myself with it in the place that makes us take the first steps towards something Big. Towards the Dream. Or to failure, no one in our world knows for sure. But enough of the metaphors and verbiage. This is what I bring to your righteous judgment:
What remains behind the scenes is fear. Or rather, outright horror from the realization of how great the demon nicknamed “PR” is, and how his favor is necessary on the path to success. As I wrote above, there are a lot of ways, sites and forums. That’s why you grab your future child, take it to the threshold of the World and… get lost. To get started, you read tutorials on how to understand tutorials on how to present your game to the public. All this is not easy at all.
Meanwhile, there is a lot at stake – no less than my destiny. Mine and another person involved in this case. An excellent aspiring artist who adds his own unique style to the project. We are standing together and the world is against us – is there any point, is there a chance to achieve at least a meager investment that would allow us to devote all our time to the project and turn it into a big interesting game??
Because gamedev is a cruel field, it’s either all or nothing.
In the near future we will polish a small demo to completion, and the will of the people as well as the funds collected through crowdfunding will decide whether it is worth continuing.
